Getting a Brief Intro about the UHMW

By admin | Aug 10, 2009

UHMWPE which is also called as the Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene is a subset of the polyethylene which is a class of thermoplastic. It is also known as the high performance polythene commonly known as the HPPE or the high modulus polythene (HMPE).

The main thing about the UHMWV is that it is made up of long chains whose molecular weight ranges from 2 to 6 millions. It is said that the longer the chain of the polymer, more is the strength of the polymer. This is the reason UHMW Liner is used in many applications nowadays.

Since the chain is very long, the intermolecular interaction is very high and hence UHMW is known to higher impact strength. UHMW Liners are also resistant to the corrosive chemicals. This substance is self lubricating, has very low moisture absorption and also has low coefficient of friction. The coefficient of friction of UHMW is almost comparable to the Teflon but it has better abrasion resistance as compared to the Teflon. Some of the other properties of the UHMW are that it is non-toxic, tasteless and odorless.

UHMWPE or the UHMW liners are commonly used in many industrial applications and also in some of the bottling sectors and the automotive sectors.
