Learn About Dog Health Problems

By admin | May 9, 2008

Many families derive great joy from their adopted Pugs, but in order to make your newest family member the happiest, you must also be familiar with the Pug dog health care it provides. This breed has been known to man for over three thousand years, and is a member of the AKC Toy group where it was first recognized in 1885. The Pug is easily recognizable because of its flat and wrinkly face, its thickset body, and a tiny curly tail. The standard height for Pugs is 10 to 14 inches, while the weight is around 13 to 20 pounds. Certainly, the breed has its own unique charm, but it is a type of dog that can develop many health problems that only their breed can catch, and special care must be taken to assure this doesn’t happen.

Dog Health

Inspect the dog’s folds carefully for any sign of infection between them, as this is a common problem for Pugs and one that must be fixed by a vet. In order to prevent this infection, the Pug should be washed regularly to remove any dirt or other debris that could cause bacterial build up.

For owners, Pug dog health problems frequently manifest in the eyes. The eyes of the breed are frequently exposed to injury and other health problems because of the shape of the face. Regularly checking should alert you to any immediate inflammation in the eye, which is a sign to get your dog to the vet right away.

A common ailment among many of the Pug breed is eating more food than they need. Always watch your dog’s food intake and keep him at a healthy weight, as a negative weight can affect a dog as badly as it can a human. Heat can bother a Pug a lot, so shade is very important to any Pug left outside, and they should never be left in a car during the summer. An overheated pug can have a hard time breathing, so make sure that you don’t leave him anywhere where he might be subjected to high heat for any length of time.

The key to good pug dog health is taking proper care of the dog and taking him to regular vet visits. For those that provide good health for their pet, they can be rewarded with years worth of companionship.
